Twaddle 0.2.1 Released!

Currently Twaddle has over 1800 users – which isn’t as a nice round number like 0.1.4 had – and I’m really excited to release 0.2.1. This release took longer than I had hoped but contains a lot of under-the-hood changes which were required for future growth of Twaddle. I also think I now have a really good road map of where I want to take Twaddle and the kind of impact that has on the user. Anyway, with my useless prattle out of the way, on to the bit you guys all care about; features and download links!

  • Added tracking of @replies / mentions
  • Added full support for Direct Messages (Send, Receive, Delete, Notifications)
  • Improved touch-friendly interface
  • Support for multi-byte UTF8 characters
  • Much faster layout engine
  • Autocompletion of friends names when posting an update
  • Follow / unfollow a user from any view
  • Updates to a user’s avatar are handled
  • Finer grained control over when Twaddle automatically synchronises with Twitter
  • Many other bug fixes

As per usual you can obtain this version in multiple ways;

Finally, if you have Microsoft Tag Reader (visit gettag.mobi on your phone’s browser) installed on your phone you can scan the tag below.

Hi, does it support API login?

  3. MrMDavidson says:

I’m not sure what you mean by API login… can you please clarify ?

  4. Douglas Yan says:

Kevin means that: in China, the twitter was blocked by the GFW(the great fire wall of china), so if this software support API means it can work in china, if not, it is useless.

  5. MrMDavidson says:

Is this API some kind of Firewall login that applications need to log in to in order to access “banned” content?

If so – then no, it doesn’t currently support it. If you can provide me with some links to documentation on what you mean then I can have a look at implementing this.

Nicely done. I am glad you made some of the improvements that you did. One questions and/or suggestion. How can I change the alert tone so it’s more specific to a tweet?

  8. MrMDavidson says:

As of 0.2 no tones are played explicitly by Twaddle. I presume that your phone is playing a tone when it gets pop up notifications? In which case, there won’t be a way to configure it to play something specific for Twaddle.

In a future release I’ll add the ability to have audio notifications. As I always have my phone on vibrate, they’re not high on the list of features :) But I’ll see if I can squeeze them into 0.3

  9. Matthew says:

I was wrong, I get no tone nor vibrate. I use Windows Mobile, if there is a way to set pop-up notifications, that would work, but a release with a sound option specific to Twaddle would put you way over the top. You’ve got pocketwit beat, your Pop-Up Notifications are sweet. Nice work.

  10. MrMDavidson says:

Start – Settings – Sounds & Notifications has an “Notifications” checkbox, but I can’t see a corresponding sound for general notifications on the Notifications tab, so I could be wrong.

Within Twaddle if you go to Settings (The S on the far right) and then Notifications there are options for Pop Ups and Vibration for each of the public timeline, direct messages and mentions. Does ticking those cause your phone to vibrate?

Will definitely work on audio notifications for a future release though.

  11. Matthew says:

I have vibrate checked for all in settings and I don’t believe it’s been vibrating. I usually have my phone docked on my desk so its hard to tell but I tested a self tweet from my other Twitter account and the notification (which is awesome and way better than others, by the way) popped up but no vibrate.

  12. MrMDavidson says:

What sort of phone do you have? It’s possible your phone does vibrate differently compared to others.

  13. Eli says:

Hey, I’d like to run this app on my windows mobile touch screen phone but the settings for the “refresh” are not working. Any simple fix? I put them all at 1 minute but getting no automatic updates whatsoever.

  14. MrMDavidson says:

Sorry for the late reply, Eli.

If you look under the Logs\ directory of the Twaddle directory there will be a bunch of files containing information. If you’re able to send those files to support@twaddle.mobi there might be some clues into your problem.

Does refreshing manually work? There’s a possibility that with a setting of one minute intervals you’re making too many calls to the Twitter servers (especially if you’ve got a desktop client running as well). Twaddle only performs 2 background tasks at once – with a setting of one minute refresh intervals and ~6 background tasks being refreshed every minute, it could be that your phone can’t process them fast enough before the next minute gets added to the queue of tasks. The “Friends” task in particular can take a long time if you have many friends. I’d avoid using one minute as your device is very unlikely to be allowed to fall into the sleep state so you’ll really eat through your battery. A setting of 5 minutes is probably more realistic and less likely to run into either of these problems.
